Preschool Cutting & Gluing Activities

Preschool Cutting & Gluing Activities thumbnail
Teachers must closely supervise preschool activities involving glue and scissors.

Gluing and scissor activities are helpful in teaching preschool children how to hold glue bottles, scissors, pens and crayons with a steady grip, cut along the lines, and draw and identify shapes, numbers and letters. For preschool children, it is best to complete projects using toxic-free glue and child-safe scissors.

  1. Paper Dress-up

    • Provide preschool-age children with paper cutouts of paper figurines -- large enough for them to pick up and easily handle. Also give them glue, crayons and paper cut-outs of clothing pieces such as skirts, shirts, pants, shoes and hats. First, ask the children to color the pieces of paper clothing to use on their figurine, then assist them with gluing the pieces onto their paper doll.

    Connect the Dots

    • Use a connect-the-dots drawing to provide preschool children with a cutting exercise. First, ask the children to connect the dots with a crayon to give them a sense of the outline. Then, using small child-safe scissors, ask the children to cut along the outline of the connect-the-dots pattern.

    Cut & Paste Puzzle

    • Give the children pieces of paper with outlines of a simple, four-piece puzzle. Assist the children with cutting out the pieces. When done, ask them to assemble the puzzle pieces on a sheet of construction paper When they have assembled the pieces properly -- a task that will most likely require a teacher's assistance -- help them glue the puzzle pieces onto the construction paper.

    Collage

    • Help preschool children create a collage with only a handful of items. They'll need colorful sheets of construction paper, safety scissors, crayons and glue. Ask the children to draw shapes or pictures on the construction paper, then cut out the pictures and shapes they drew. To finish, ask the children to paste their cut out paper objects onto a fresh sheet of construction paper.
