The simple shape of a sheet cake makes it perfect for decorating because it serves as a blank canvas. For a 5-year-old boy, pick his favorite hobby or interest and make that the basis of your cake. Once the cake is baked and cools to room temperature, decorate the top with frosting and toys using simple decorating ideas.
Race Car Track
Turn a simple sheet cake into a race car track for a little boy that loves racing. Cover the cake with frosting dyed green in an even layer. Use a combination of gray and white frosting to make a circular race track shape on the top of the cake. Leave a space empty in the center of the track to mimic the look of an infield. Pipe white frosting through the center of the gray, creating the lanes on the track. Display a few of the birthday boy's favorite toy cars on top, arranging the cars around the track as if racing.
For a 5-year-old boy that loves the outdoors and creepy crawlies, decorate the sheet cake to look like a large swamp. Mix white frosting with green food coloring and a few drops of red food coloring to make a dark brown shade. Cover the sheet cake with this brown frosting for your base. Create a bright green frosting from green food coloring and white icing and pipe that around the cake to make vines and plants in the swamp. Use blue frosting to make puddles or water on the cake. Decorate the top with toy alligators and gummy worms.
Use cupcakes to enhance the design of this simple sheet cake. Cut six inches off the short side of the cake and set aside. Cut the remaining piece of the cake in half along the long side. Coat each cake in a different color of frosting in a color associated with Lego toys, such as red, yellow, blue or green. Set the two longer cakes side-by-side and place the shorter cake directly on top. Trim the top off four cupcakes and place them upside-down on the base cakes -- one on each of the bottom cakes and two on the top cake. Cover the cupcakes with more frosting in the corresponding colors.
Decorate the sheet cake in different colors of frosting to make a sports field. Apply a layer of green frosting to make the base of the field. Use white frosting to decorate any markings on the field. For a football cake, use pretzel sticks to make goalposts at the end of the cake. If you're making a baseball cake, use marshmallows cut in half to make each base.
