The Federal Housing Administration recommends 100 square feet as the minimum size of a bedroom, or a room that measures about 9 x 10 feet, which only allows space for a small bed, nightstand and chest of drawers. Designing a small room requires careful planning and efficient use of every inch. Many of the same techniques can be carried over to other small rooms in your home.
By clearing out clutter and unnecessary items for your small bedroom, you will instantly create the illusion of extra space. Perhaps you can move extra furniture to anther room. Remove books and magazines you are not currently reading. Organizing the closet will allow you to tuck a clothes hamper inside rather than piling clothes on the floor. Remove extra bed pillows, and select tailored bed linens, bed skirt and window treatments for visual impact.
Painting the walls and ceiling with light, neutral colors will reflect more light and make the room feel larger. Combine bedding and a headboard that have a similar neutral color, and add interest by selecting textured fabrics. Incorporate bright or dark colors in the room with small accessories, such as lampshades or a vase on the dresser.
Buy furniture that maximizes functions, such as a bed with storage underneath or a small bookshelf with storage bins to keep many small items out of sight. Opt for nightstands that are mounted on the wall rather than a freestanding piece to give the illusion of more floor space. Furniture that is round or curved takes up more space than straight, rectangular pieces.
To simplify a small room, create one focal point to draw your eye. Adding a simple colorful piece of art above a neutral colored bed provides visual interest while maintaining a clean look. If you do not particularly like your bed and would rather draw attention elsewhere, put an attractive vase alone on the dresser without any other knickknacks.
