By adding text, graphics and textures, you can create a special birthday card.

Purchased birthday cards can be quite elaborate depending on what you want to pay for it. But you can design your own card without the high cost, making it as elegant or as elaborate as you wish it to be. Making use of different types, colors and sizes of fonts, graphics, paper and other textures, you can create a memorable one-of-a-kind birthday card.

  1. Text

    • What you do with your card depends on the mood you wish to set. The mood might be formal, informal, humorous, sarcastic, serious or just plain fun. The text on the birthday card helps set this tone. An informal or more serious birthday card might use this saying from Quote Mountain: "Today, be aware of how you are spending your 1,440 beautiful moments, and spend them wisely." The font you use will reflect the mood or tone of the birthday card you're creating. For a formal card, use a classic black font of Times New Roman or a bold script. If you're going for fun or humorous, pull out large and small fonts of all colors and sizes. Use the font colors, type and size to enhance the text and mood of the card.

    Graphics

    • There is a wealth of graphics available for download online. The graphics can be classic or funny. They can be illustrations or real-life representations of people, creatures or things. You can use all or part of a graphic by utilizing a graphic program. Manipulate graphics to be the size you wish to fill. Cut pictures or illustrations from the newspaper, magazines or fliers that come in the mail to add to a birthday card. Take these cutouts and print them out to the size you need for your birthday card design. Add photographs to your birthday card design. These can be downloaded from online files directly onto the card, or you can paste them on. Photographs and graphics add to the tone of the birthday card.

    Paper

    • A birthday card starts with a folded piece of paper. You can make your birthday card as large or small as you like. Use different colors of paper. You can cut out objects such as a birthday cake with candles for your birthday card. Start with plain copy paper and add color with crayons, markers and glitter. Cut out different parts of the design from various types of paper and glue each on separately. Start with colored paper, construction paper, card stock or other textured paper to add depth to your designs and add eye appeal.

    Make it Real

    • Depending on what you seek to convey with your birthday card, you can add any number of items. Add a sucker to the card. Glue it on, or cut two slits and tuck the sucker into those slits. Add real birthday candles to the cake graphic. Add flower petals in spring and summer, leaves in fall and pine needles in winter. Do consider the thickness of the card when deciding what to add. The more you add to a card, the more you need to make sure to start with a heavier-weight paper, or even card stock, so the birthday card won't tear when handled or opened.
