Finger foods or cocktail foods are also known as bite-size appetizers, hors d'oeuvres or canapés. People eat finger foods with their hands, not toothpicks, forks or chopsticks. Examples of popular Western finger foods include chicken wings, ribs, mini quiches, mini cheesecakes, tea sandwiches, cheese and crackers, shrimp cocktail and mini pizzas. It is fashionable to serve dessert items as finger foods. The purpose of serving finger foods is to encourage mingling amongst guests at a function where such treats are served.
Dates Wrapped in Bacon
Dates wrapped in bacon are a fabulous flavor combination. This finger food is a premium appetizer due to the high cost of dates. The smoky flavor of the bacon mixes well with the sweet flavor of the date. Each piece is bite sized and takes little preparation. The success of this appetizer is to cook the bacon well done and to not just drain, but pat the grease from the individual strips of bacon. A person can put a date wrapped with bacon into their mouth, chew a few times, and continue to talk without missing a beat.
Barbecue is the oldest cooking method on earth. Pick it up with your fingers and eat it. Grilled or smoked food creates an aroma in the air that makes your mouth water and makes you feel like reaching for the ribs on the platter. BBQ ribs are a popular finger food served at cookouts.
Artichokes are a premium finger food originating from North Africa. There is only one way to enjoy an artichoke as a finger food and that is to peel off a leaf, dip it in sauce, place the leaf between your teeth, and tear the flesh off by pulling the leaf between your clenched teeth. Artichokes have a sweet earthy flavor that is unique to this particular vegetable. When you eat an artichoke, you are actually eating a flower.
Chicken wings are the most popular Western finger food today. People grill, bake or deep fry their wings and then drown them in a variety of sauces ranging from sweet to spicy hot. The most popular chicken wing flavor is Buffalo sauce. Buffalo sauce consists of cayenne pepper, white vinegar, garlic powder, salt and melted butter. If anyone diverges from the traditional Buffalo sauce it is usually to make it hotter.
