Over-the-Sink Window Treatment

Save

Continue the style of your kitchen into the window treatment over the sink. Because the window will be exposed to water, choose either a washable curtain or a short window treatment that will be above the reach of any water spray. Skip the blinds and shades if you do not need them for privacy or light control.

Fabric Valances

  • A fabric valance with a casing is hung on a plain curtain rod. Chose your fabric to blend with your decorating style. Since a valance is high above a sink, you can use a formal non-washable fabric such as silk. Use a print or a solid cotton fabric in a more casual room. Use a valance two or three times as wide as the window for a ruffled look. A valance the same width as the curtain rod will hang straight. Make a simple fabric valance by hanging tea towels, napkins or place mats from clips attached to curtain rings. Use a decorative curtain rod for this window treatment.

Cornices

  • A cornice can be made out of painted or fabric covered wood. It is shaped like half a box and hangs over the top of the window frame. A cornice that reaches the ceiling adds height to a window. A cornice can also be tailored from fabric and hung from a board above the window.

Roman Shades

  • Roman blinds are pulled by cords running through rings sewn on the back of the shade. They have a tailored look and are good for light control in a modern kitchen. Balloon valances are a variation of Roman blinds with a gathered lower edge. They create a softer effect and are good in a romantic kitchen.

Tie-Up Shades

  • Tie-up shades are straight fabric shades that are pulled up with ribbon or fabric ties. A variation on this has buttons to hold up the shades.

Bamboo Shades

  • Bamboo shades blend into many decorating schemes. Natural bamboo is a neutral color that can be used with several types of wooden cabinets. It can also add a touch of nature to a kitchen with painted cabinets. Natural bamboo is especially lovely with bright colors or dark brown.

Curtains

  • Short curtains are often called cafe curtains. Curtains that are sewn together at the center top and pulled back with curtain ties complement a country kitchen. Make them up in gingham with ruffles for the ultimate country look. More modern curtains hang straight down from a decorative rod. For the simplest treatment, hang lengths of fabric from clips attached to curtain rings.
