Ideas for a Wedding Speech

You've been asked to say a few things about the bride and groom at their wedding. Or perhaps you are the groom and want to say something to your guests. The trouble is, you're stumped for what to say. Don't lose sleep over putting together a wedding speech. Think of memories you have of the couple, or the people you want to say "thank you" to.

  1. Memories

    • If you're the best man, maid of honor or a parent, remember when your friend or child first introduced you to the bride or groom. You can say something cute about your first impression of the bride or say something about how you knew from the start that the couple was meant to be. If you're responsible for pairing them up, take credit for it in your speech. The memory will establish your relationship to the bride or groom, so that guests will understand why you're up there giving a speech.

    Say Something Funny

    • A best man or maid of honor can tell a funny story, but something not too embarrassing about the bride or groom. Throw in a joke, if you can. You can talk about the time the groom tried to impress the bride by performing some feat of strength, only to have it backfire or the time the bride tried to prepare a gourmet dinner, only to end up ordering take-out. Don't say anything vulgar or spill any details about the couple's personal life during any stories.

    Thank Everyone

    • Thank the guests for coming to the wedding if you're the bride or her parents. If you're the groom, thank the bride's parents for doing such a great job raising their daughter. Also say thanks to the officiant, your caterer and anyone else who contributed to the wedding, including the bridal party and groomsmen. Because a wedding joins two families together, you may want to welcome the bride or groom's family into your own during the thank-you portion of the speech.

    Throw In a Quote

    • Start your speech with a romantic or sentimental quote that offers an insight into marriage. The quote will get everyone's attention and is a great opener for a parent or a best man or matron of honor. From the quote, you can segue into your own words of wisdom on love and married life, or keep the speech light and move onto a story about the couple that somehow connects to the quote.
