Homemade Carpet Deodorizer
Considering we walk all over them, carpets can get quite dirty and odors can linger long after the initial mess has been cleaned up -- especially when you include pets and children in the mix. While there are plenty of commercial solutions to clean your carpets, they can be quite expensive or contain harsh chemicals. Avoid the chemicals and the cost by using a few household items to create your own carpet deodorizer. Does this Spark an idea?

Vinegar and Water

Fill a plastic spray bottle with equal proportions of white vinegar and warm water. Screw the cap on and mix solution together.
Application

Spray the solution over your carpet in a sweeping motion. Coat the carpet, but don't saturate it. The vinegar solution will work to neutralize any growing bacteria within the carpet fibers. Allow 30 minutes for the solution to dry.

Baking Soda

Sprinkle baking soda lightly over the carpet. It may be use helpful to use a drink shaker to avoid dumping out the baking soda in huge clumps. The baking soda will absorb the odors. For particularly pungent odors, use a broom to sweep the baking soda deeper into the carpet fibers. Allow at least another 30 minutes to an hour for the baking soda to settle and absorb the odors.
Clean Up

Vacuum your carpet to clean up the baking soda. Once removed the unpleasant odor should be gone. It may take several applications to completely remove pungent smells.
