Business office technology is any product that is used in a business office in order to facilitate smooth workflow. This technology can come in the form of a piece of equipment or it can come in the form of something as simple as adhesive tape or a corkboard and push pins.

History

In 1874, the state of business office technology was found with the Sholes & Glidden Type Writer. This machine was manufactured by Remington & Sons and the cost of it was $125. Between 1874 and 1878, approximately 5,000 of these machines were sold. Of course, since this typewriter was in its infancy, numerous problems occurred and many of those early machines broke down. It wasn’t until the arrival of the Underwood No. 5 typewriter that the early office technology machines performed reliably. For decades, the state of business office technology was found with typewriters, until the arrival of the Lyons Electronic Office (LEO), which was the first office computer.

Low Tech

Business office technology does not need to be high-tech in order to prove valuable. When Bette Graham worked for the Texas Bank and Trust, she proved to be an able assistant but a very bad typist. She discovered that using a water-based tempera paint and a fine-bristled brush, she could correct any mistakes she made without her employer noticing. In 1956, Bette sold her first bottle of that product, calling it “Mistake Out.” In time, that product became known as “Liquid Paper.”

Instruction

Business office technology is taught in colleges and universities throughout the country. While it might consist of learning how to use the latest office computer programs, it can also include such areas as developing a sound business office management policy. Since the purpose of business office technology is to make a business environment more efficient, improving the way business operates can assist in business office technology.

Evolution

Business office technology is ever-evolving. With the arrival of smart phones, a business office no longer has to be stationary. It can be wherever a worker is. By accessing various business office apps for the smart phones on the market, a business person can check inventory, pay payroll and do any of dozens of other functions without being locked into the office. In addition, business office technology now includes elements such as “cloud computing,” in which data is stored virtually in remote areas and no longer within a physical office.
