The mock leno weave offers an interlocking or interlacing pattern, in which the warp and weft yarns are weaved over and under each other to create a grid-like appearance. The yarn is weaved in such a way that it creates a pattern of vertical and horizontal lines, with openings in between. The pattern is also referred to as lacing, because of the holes in between the warp and weft yarns.

Since a mock leno weaving technique relies on the warp yarn to create the pattern, a dobby loom is the only type of loom that is appropriate for this weaving technique. The yarns are thread onto the loom and the operator works the dobby device to create the interlacing pattern between the warp and weft yarns.
To make the mock leno weaving pattern stand out, weavers use contrasting colors between the warp and weft yarns. That is, if the warp threads are pink, the weaver can use a green weft yarn to enhance the contrast and pattern. The mock leno weaving technique also allows for patterns to be made out of colorful yarn, so that you can create flowers, stars or other shapes on the fabric out of the weft and warp threads.
Since the mock leno weaving technique has gaps in between the groups of weft and warp yarns, this pattern is airy and appropriate for decorative scarves and shawls, as well as for blouses, curtains and pillowcases. If you intend to wear a garment made from a mock leno weave, be warned that the openness of the pattern will expose the skin and not be protective against cold weather.
