Lay old rags, newspapers or other types of drop cloths on the work area to prevent damage or stains from paint spills and drops.

Sand your project using the method of your choice, such as a hand sander or piece of sandpaper, and for best results, sand with the grain of the wood. Sand until smooth and wipe the item down to remove all dust and particles. Use a wood cleaner of your choice to clean the surface, and seal the wood with a coat of primer.

    Painting

    • Now that the wood is prepared for painting, begin applying the first coat by brushing the paint on the object in even strokes following the grain of the wood if possible. If using spray paint, hold the can approximately 8 to 12 inches from the surface of the wood and spray the paint in slow sweeps. Let the first coat of paint dry thoroughly before adding the second coat the same way you applied the first.

    Stencils

    • Use stencils to add decorative designs to your wooden crafts. They also are ideal for beginners since they are quick and easy to use. To create a design on a wooden object, position the stencil on the item and spray or paint in the cut out areas.
