Traditional Wedding Reception Activities
Wedding receptions vary just as much as the new couples they celebrate, but you can find a common thread of traditional elements that runs through just about all of them. Whether you want to incorporate them into your wedding is up to you, but knowing what typically goes on during a celebration of a couple's nuptials will help you decide just what will work for you, your family and your friends when you tie the knot.

Cocktail Party
-
Once a wedding wraps up, the bride and groom will likely be tied up with picture-taking for a little while, so most receptions begin with a cocktail party for the guests to while away the time until the newlyweds make their appearance. A cocktail hour will usually feature an open or cash bar and some light hors d'oeuvres.
First Dance
-
Once the newlyweds arrive, it's traditional for everyone to stop so that the master of ceremonies can announce their arrival and first dance. Once the dance is over, the groom may dance with his mother and the bride with her father. Then the MC will open up the floor to everyone again.

Cutting the Cake
-
The cutting of the cake is another big event at the reception. The MC will stop the dancing and announce that the bride and groom will do the honors, and the couple will make their way to the table holding the cake. The bride and groom will serve themselves a slice and then feed each other a piece -- sometimes mashing it into each other's face for a laugh.
Toasts
-
It is traditional to give toasts at the wedding reception. Typically, the maid of honor and the best man will stand up and give a speech describing the groom or bride's positive attributes and reminiscing about shared memories. Others may also give speeches, including other members of the wedding party and immediate family.
Final Farewell
-
The final farewell is how receptions usually finish. The MC will have everyone stand near the door, either inside or outside, and have the bride and groom rush out to a waiting car as the guests cheer. The guests may also throw rice or rose petals as a last bit of fanfare before the couple starts their new life together.
