The volumetric capacity of a bathtub depends on its dimensions.

According to the bathroom fixtures company Kohler, the size of the average bathtub in America nearly doubled from 1980 to 2011. This means that the average bathtub volume also increased during that same period. However, many bathtubs in the U.S. are still the standard 5 feet by 8 feet in size. The average volume of a bathtub in the U.S. depends on the shape and size of the unit. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Standard Bathtub Dimensions

    • A standard bathtub has an interior dimension of 60-inches-by-30-inches. A tub has sides that are sloped, making the bottom measurements of the tub narrower than the upper measurement. At the very bottom of the bathing well, the measurements will most likely be 45-inches-by-22-inches, and 55-inches-by-24-inches at the very top. The materials used to construct the bathtub do not affect these measurements, so both iron and fiberglass tubs will feature measurements close to these dimensions.

    Filling a Bathtub

    • Depending on how deep you like your bath water while bathing, the average volume in an American bathtub uses between 30 and 50 gallons of water, according to the Consumer Energy Center. These figures are for a bath that is about half full, giving you room to get in without displacing water onto your bathroom floor. However, to fill a bathtub completely full, the Water Systems Council estimates you will need 100 gallons.

    Soaking Tubs

    • Soaking tubs are used for therapeutic purposes. If your home tub is designed for long, luxurious soaks, it will hold more water than a standard tub. A 4-foot oval soaking tub holds 100 gallons of water and two people, while an 8-foot round soaking tub holds as much as 700 gallons.

    Antique or Antique-style Bathtubs

    • If your bathtub is older or just formed in the style of an old, antique tub, it will have a slightly different capacity, especially if it has a curved lumbar support. One such model from American Standard has dimensions of 72 1/8-inches-by-37 1/2-inches-by-27 1/4-inches. Depending on how deep you like your bath water, this tub can hold between 30 and 60 gallons, with a maximum capacity that exceeds a standard tub.
