What Do You Use to Mend Socks?
Mending or "darning" a sock is not as simple as one would think. It does not involve the traditional method of repairing fabric, as this can cause uncomfortable bumps, making it difficult to walk. Instead, the hole is repaired by using a running stitch technique, where the thread is woven in rows, reversing the direction after each row. This is not a difficult process; however you will need a few specific items to get started. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Needle
-
A very blunt needle will be needed to repair your sock. If you are repairing a wool sock, you will need a needle with an eye large enough for the yarn. A large regular needle can be used, but a darning needle will work best.
Thread or Yarn
-
The type of thread you use will depend on the sock fabric or material. Use yarn for wool socks and embroidery floss for synthetic or cotton socks. The darning process involves combining the horizontal running stitch (to sew around the edges of the hole and the thin parts of the sock), and the vertical running stitch to weave the thread over the hole.

Darning Egg or an Old Light Bulb
-
You will need a smooth round object inside the sock to support the hole or to hold the shape of the sock in place as you stitch. You may purchase a darning egg; however an old light bulb will prove just as effective.
Scissors
-
Have a pair of scissors to cut the thread or yarn as you work.
