Students will look for examples of geometry in everyday life.

Creating a geometry scrapbook is a creative way to conclude a unit on the subject. It provides students with a variety of options to explore the subject of geometry and personalize it. Going out into the world and finding examples of geometry in everyday life makes the topic real to them and rationalizes their need to learn and understand it. Used as a culminating activity, a geometry scrapbook is something that students can take with them and review in later years.

  1. Central Theme

    • Have students decide on a central theme for their geometry examples. These can occur in nature, at school, around town or around their home. Basing their scrapbook on a central theme will help them to organize their search for objects.

    Take Pictures

    • Students can take pictures or simply draw them if they do not have a camera available. They should provide at least one example for every shape they need to address. A rectangular desk at school, a hexagonal stop sign around town and a circular coffee cup at home are all examples of items that can be used for a geometry scrapbook.

    Page Layout

    • Have students decide how they will put the geometry scrapbook together. This will include the order of the pages and how the individual pages are laid out. Also, students will determine how they are going to put all of the pages into a book. They can use a glue stick to attach pages together, buy a cheap photo album or punch holes in pages and tie them with yarn.

    Add Content

    • Now is the time that the students will gather each of their examples for their geometry scrapbook, place them on the page and add text to enhance. The students will label the shape, explain where it is from, give examples of other items for the shape and add a mathematical definition.
