Crochet booties to get the right fit for your preemie.

Preemies, or premature infants, are babies that are born before the 37th week of pregnancy. Since they are born so early, preemies are much lighter than full-term babies and require much smaller clothes. Crochet a pair of booties to keep preemie feet cozy and warm during the first few weeks of life. Crochet as a gift or as a donation to your local maternity unit or charity.

Instructions

    • 1

Crochet a foundation chain of 23 using worsted-weight yarn and a size G crochet hook. Work a single crochet into the second chain from the hook, and then in each chain across. Chain one, and turn your work. You will now have 22 single crochets.

    • 2

Crochet row two. Work a single crochet into each single crochet across the row. Chain one, and then turn your work. Repeat this row two times. For row five, work a single crochet into each single crochet across the row.

    • 3

Crochet the top of the bootie. Work a slip stitch in the first six stitches, chain three, and make one double-crochet into the same stitch. Work a double-crochet in the next two stitches, leaving the last five stitches unworked. Chain two, and then turn your work.

    • 4

Crochet the final row. Work one double-crochet into each double-crochet across. For a taller bootie, repeat this row, turning your work each time. Repeat until you have reached the desired length.

    • 5

Finish the bootie. Weave in any ends, and then fold the bootie in half and sew up. Repeat all the steps to make the second bootie.

    • 6

Add optional decorations. Thread satin ribbon through a tapestry needle, and then weave through the top stitches of the bootie. Bring to the front, and tie any excess into a bow.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a size F crochet hook for smaller booties that fit a 2 to 3 lb. baby.
