How to Safely Wash Padded Bras in the Washer

How to Safely Wash Padded Bras in the Washer thumbnail
Bras should be washed separately from other clothes.

Lingerie is expensive and delicate. Padded bras cannot be thrown into the washer like a shirt or jeans, but need to be treated as delicately as possible. Though some peopls believe hand washing is the only way to lengthen the life of a bra, this is not the case. Correctly washing a padded bra in a washer will not harm the bra, but allow it to keep its shape and color as hand washing would. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a gentle detergent. Look for detergents that are cold water formulated, dye and perfume free, color protectant and stretch resistant. Choose either liquid or powder, depending on what you are used to and what works best with your washer.

    • 2

Hook the clasps on the bra, as doing so will prevent the clasps from damaging the other garments. It will also prevent the bra from twisting excessively. Bra holders or lingerie bags are also available for more protection. Place the bra into the holder and the cups will maintain shape through the wash. Lingerie bags protect the bra from coming in contact with other garments and shields the bra from the harsher aspects of the washing process.

    • 3

Set the wash cycle to "delicate" or "hand wash." You want the gentlest cycle possible on your machine. Set the temperature to cold -- this will prevent damage -- and the spin cycle to "gentle" or the lowest setting.

    • 4

Follow the directions for adding detergent to your machine. If putting the detergent directly into the washer, run the water for 1 minute before adding the clothes -- it is possible for the detergent to stain the clothes if applied directly onto the garments.

    • 5

Add the padded bras. Only wash the item with similar items or garments that are also delicate. Do not over load the washer, especially with lingerie. Only wash a few items at a time.

    • 6

Remove the garments promptly once the wash has finished. Carefully remove the excess water from the padded bras by pressing on the padding with your hands or with a dry towel. Do not "wring" the bra or misshape it in order to get the water out.

    • 7

Drape the padded bras over your shower curtain rod, a drying rack or clothing line. Let the bras air dry.
