How to Remove Scorches on Iron Plates thumbnail
Eliminate burns to restore your iron's plate.

When they get too hot, metal plates can oxidize, resulting in dark-colored burn marks. These create unsightly blemishes and compromise the finished look of the metal. Scorches often occur on the plates of clothes irons, where a high concentration of heat occurs. Scorch marks that sit on the surface of the iron plate do not require methods of removal that will further damage the metal, such as abrasion or strong acids. Remove burns through stain transfer, dissolving and polishing. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Rub a bar of soap on a burn on a clothes iron. Turn the iron on medium and wait for it to heat up. Work the plate of the iron back and forth on an old rag to wipe off as much burnt matter as possible.

    • 2

Combine equal parts white vinegar and salt in a pot. Heat the mixture until the salt dissolves and the vinegar is steaming. Rub the solution on the burn mark with a soft cloth or cotton balls.

    • 3

Mask any adjoining aluminum or plastic parts with paper taped at the edges. Spray what remains of the burn mark generously with oven cleaner. Leave the oven cleaner to sit for a few minutes. Rinse the metal with fresh water.

    • 4

Crumple a piece of aluminum foil. Polish the iron with the crumpled foil, stopping every few seconds to check the surface. Continue polishing until an adequate sheen is achieved.
