How to Color Rocks

Kids love playing with rocks. They also enjoy coloring with crayons. Combine the two activities and you have one cool craft. Although there are different methods for making colored rocks, this method works well if you want almost instant results or a kid-friendly craft. With only three supplies needed to complete, this project is a nice craft to fill time on a rainy day or any day that you want to try a quick project.

Things You'll Need

  • Smooth rocks
  • Crayons
  • Baking sheet (foil lined)

Instructions

    • 1

Preheat the oven to 225 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 2

Color directly onto the rocks. Color all over with one crayon color or multiple colors.

    • 3

Place the colored rocks on the foil-lined baking sheet. Put in the oven for three minutes.

    • 4

Remove from the oven and let cool.

Tips & Warnings

  • After removing the rocks from the oven, while the wax is still wet, carve designs or initials on the rocks.
  • Mark Xs and Os on the rocks to make a tic-tac-toe set.
  • The crayon wax should melt onto the rocks but not spill over onto the baking sheet. If this starts happening, remove the rocks from the oven immediately.
