How to Hang Two Paintings Side by Side

Paintings can easily be used to add personality and color to an otherwise plain wall. Hanging two paintings side by side will fill wall space and make your home look more welcoming and interesting to you and to guests. When hanging two paintings next to each other on a wall, choose paintings that are either by the same artist or that share a common theme or color scheme to keep the wall looking coordinated and uniform. Hanging two paintings side by side is easy to do.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Picture hangers
  • Choose the height at which you want the two paintings to hang. When calculating the height, be sure to measure from the anchor on the back of the painting down to the floor. For example, if the anchor is in the middle of the painting, measure from the middle. Use the tape measure for accurate measurement and use the pencil to make two marks on the wall at the height you choose.

  • Choose how far apart you want the paintings to hang. Measure from the center of each painting to the outer edge and then add the amount of distance you want to this number. For example, if your two paintings are 18 inches across and you want 6 inches of distance between them, you would want the two marks to be 24 inches apart. Use the tape measure to measure the distance accurately and make two marks on the wall that are the correct height and distance apart. These marks represent where the paintings will be hanged.

  • Place the level against the wall. Make sure that the two marks are level with one another.

  • Push a nail through the top of each picture hanger. Line the nail up so that the bottom of the hook is lined up with one of the pencil marks and hammer the nail into the wall. Repeat this process with the other wall mark.

  • Hang the anchor of each painting onto the hanger nailed to the wall. You may need to slightly tilt or adjust the paintings to get them to hang evenly and straight on the wall. Set the level on top of the paintings to verify that they're straight.
