How to Cook Canned Black Eye Peas

A member of the legume family, the black-eyed pea is actually a bean. Black-eyed peas are a staple in Southern cooking and can be used in a variety of meals. They are low in fat and sodium and have no cholesterol. They are also a good source of fiber, iron and potassium. Canned black-eyed peas are already cooked, so you can eat them right out of the can or add them to a salad. However, if you prefer them hot, all you need to do is heat them.

  • Open the can and pour the black-eyed peas into a pot.

  • Place the pot over medium heat.

  • Add desired seasoning if any.

  • Stir peas occasionally.

  • Cook until black-eyed peas are heated through. This usually takes from 5 to 10 minutes.
