How to Crochet a Hood

Save

A crochet hood is a great accessory to add to a scarf or jacket for the winter. Make it from thick yarn for maximum warmth or out of craft yarn like Fun Fur for a fancy look. Try experimenting with different hook sizes to obtain hoods of different gauges and looks. Variegated yarn provides a decorative touch without too much effort. You can also make a crochet hood from yarn in one color and add a crochet edging in a yarn of contrasting color.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 balls of worsted weight yarn
  • Size G (Size 6) crochet hook
  • 5-1/4 inch buttons
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Make 77 chain stitches as the base of the hood.

  • Make a single crochet in the second chain from the hook. Make a double crochet in the next chain.

  • Make a single crochet in the next single crochet stitch and a double crochet in the next double crochet stitch. Repeat this sequence until the end of the chain and turn.

  • Make a double crochet stitch at each end of the next 5 rows of the hood. Continue this pattern until the hood measures 13 inches.

  • Make a single crochet edging all around the hood in the same or a contrasting color. Fold the top row of the hood in half and use the same colored yarn to sew the top seam together to form the hood. Tie a knot and fasten off the yarn.

  • Attach the same or a contrasting color of yarn and single crochet along the front of the hood. Make one chain at the end, turn and make single crochet stitches back to the beginning of the hood. Chain one and turn.

  • Double crochet in the next chain and continue until the end. Repeat this sequence for the next four rows. Double crochet over two single crochet stitches at each end. Fasten off the yarn to finish the edging.

  • Make the button row for the hood to attach it to the jacket. Turn the hood and make a double crochet in each single crochet of the first row. Chain one and turn. Make 1 single crochet the next stitch and 1 double crochet in the following stitch. Follow this sequence until the end. This makes the buttonholes for the buttons to attach to the jacket.

  • Make a single crochet edging all around the edge. Fasten off and sew buttons on the inside of the collar on the jacket where you want to attach the hood. Attach the crochet hood to the jacket.
