How to Make a Children's Wrist Wallet Tutorial

How to Make a Children's Wrist Wallet Tutorial thumbnail
Make a fabric wallet for a convenient wrist accessory.

You can keep your child's lunch money secure and always nearby with a wallet that wraps around the wrist and secures with hook-and-loop fastener strips. The wallet can also serve to hold tokens at the arcade or spending money on a school trip. Make the wallet from a neutral fabric for an accessory that blends in with the child's outfit or use a bright colored or patterned fabric for a child who likes a little bit of flair to their accessories.

Things You'll Need

  • Medium-weight fabric
  • Lining fabric
  • Sewing needle
  • Thread
  • 4-inch zipper
  • Hook-and-loop fastener strips

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a rectangle on your outer fabric that measures about 8 ½ inches-by-3 inches for the front of the wallet. Cut out the rectangle and use it to make an identical second rectangle for the back of the wallet.

    • 2

Use one of the rectangles to trace two identical rectangles onto a piece of lining fabric. Cut out the lining rectangles.

    • 3

Place one piece of lining fabric on top of each of the fabric rectangles with the right sides together. Sew around the sides of each rectangle to join the pieces together. Leave a small 1 ½-inch hole in the seam line. Reach into the open gap in the seam line and turn the fabric right side out.

    • 4

Make a horizontal slit in the center of one of the joined rectangles from the outer fabric and through the lining. Make the slit 4 inches long. Make tiny diagonal notches at each end of the slit. Fold the fabric along the slit inward and onto the lining side of the fabric to make smooth edges for the opening of the wallet.

    • 5

Pin the zipper to the lining side of the rectangle with the teeth facing out toward the outer fabric through the slit. Sew the zipper in place.

    • 6

Pin the two sets of rectangles together with the lining side of each rectangle facing outward. Sew the sides together, leaving a 1 ½-inch gap in the seam line. Reach into the gap and turn the wrist wallet right side out.

    • 7

Cut two 1-inch-by-2 ½-inch pieces of hook-and-loop fastener strips. Pin one piece along the short left side of the wallet. Pin this piece on the front of the wallet. The zipper opens on this same side. Pin the complementary piece of hook-and-loop fastener along the short right side of the back of the wallet.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you use a flimsy fabric for the wallet, cut a strip of fusible interfacing and fuse it to the wrong side of the outer fabric before making the slit. This gives the fabric a bit more strength for the zipper.
