A lace scallop can be wide or an edge lace, the application for both is the same.

Adding an applique scallop to fabric adds charm and femininity to an otherwise plain garment. Scalloped lace is one of the most common types of scalloped applique. Scalloped lace is lace that has a half-circle edge; the lace is not straight, but has one or both decorative edges. An applique scallop should be applied to a straight hem or other unfinished edge, then the hem trimmed to reflect the shape of the scallop. An applique scallop could be stretch or rigid, application for which is the same; use a sewing machine's zig-zag function.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the hem or piece of fabric flat on a table.

    • 2

Pin the scallop on top of the fabric so that the lowest part of the scallop overlaps the fabric by 1/2 inch. Pin the wrong side of the scallop to the right side of the fabric so both right sides are facing up.

    • 3

Use the zig-zag stitch of your sewing machine to sew the scalloped edge of the applique to the fabric, following the scalloped edge of the applique. The zig-zag stitch should be at the very edge of the scallop, covering the scallop edge completely.

    • 4

Use the scissors to clip the extra fabric behind the scallop (seam allowance) to 1/8 inch.
