How to Measure Calves

Whenever you want to purchase calf-length boots, you need to know the width of your calves to make sure your new boots fit correctly. Measuring the calf portion of your leg is easy to do and doesn’t take much time at all. In order to correctly measure the size of your calf, you will need to determine where the widest portion is and have a sewer’s measuring tape on hand.

Things You'll Need

  • Sewer's measuring tape
  • Hand mirror (optional)

Determine where the widest portion of your calf is. Use a mirror to help you see the back of your legs.

Wrap the sewer’s measuring tape around your calf, beginning the tape at the widest portion. Wrap it completely around your calf until the tape overlaps.

Check the measurement where the two parts of the tape meet up. This number is the width of your calf.

Tips & Warnings

  • When wrapping the tape measure around your calf, don't pull too tight, as this could create a false measurement. The measuring tape should fit snugly around your leg.
  • Measure both legs, as one calf may be wider than the other.
