Homemade laminated fabric items are a great gift for a special friend or family member. Laminated fabric is a unique material that craft enthusiasts use to make items such as umbrellas and even children's bibs. Many types of laminated fabrics are available commercially; however, you may be unable to find the specific laminated fabric to match your decor. You can laminate your own fabric at home to create personalized items for yourself, friends and family with materials commonly found at crafts stores for a low cost.
Things You'll Need
- Ironing board
- Iron-on vinyl
Cut a piece of fabric to the desired shape and size. Ensure to cut any loose threads with scissors.
Heat your iron according to the iron's specifications. Place the fabric on an ironing board. Remove creases and wrinkles in the fabric with the iron.
Use scissors to cut a piece of the iron-on vinyl to a size and shape slightly larger than the fabric. Peel the backing off the vinyl, but do not discard of the backing.
Position the vinyl against the fabric by lining it up and placing it onto the fabric. Smooth out the vinyl on the fabric by pressing onto the vinyl and fabric with your hands. Remove any creases and air bubbles.
Trim any excess vinyl to the fabric's size with scissors.
Position the backing paper from the vinyl sheet on top of the laminated fabric. Iron the fabric and vinyl to bond the two sheets. Do not use steam with your iron. Use medium heat.
