MLB caps are hats that feature the official logos and styles of the 30 major league baseball teams. These hats have been sold for decades from various merchants and come in a variety of fabrics, including cotton twill, polyester blends and even wool. Depending on the type of fabric from which your MLB cap is made, you can wash your cap using the appropriate cleaning products and method. Before washing, look at the tag on the inside of your cap to determine the type of fabric and special washing instructions.
Things You'll Need
- Pre-wash stain remover
- Gentle laundry detergent
- Wash rags
- Wool-safe detergent
Cleaning Cotton, Polyester and Jersey Mesh Caps
Dab or spray a pre-wash stain remover onto the areas of the cap that are especially soiled with debris or stains.
Launder the cap in your washing machine on the cold water setting. Don't wash it alone, however. If possible, place it in a washing cycle with clothing of similar colors.
Remove the cap from the washing machine and allow it to air dry. Never put it in the dryer, as the heat could deform or shrink the hat.
Cleaning Older Baseball Caps or Caps Without Tags
Rub a small amount of mild detergent mixed with cold water on an area of the hat that is not visible. Rinse the hat and allow the spot to air dry. If the color does not change, then it is possible to wash the hat without damaging it.
Wet a washrag with water and a mild detergent. Gently scrub all areas of the hat that are soiled.
Rinse the hat with a clean rag and cold water and allow it to air dry.
Cleaning Wool Caps
Fill a sink with cold water and two tablespoons of detergent suitable for wool.
Submerge your hat into the washing solution and gently dab the soiled areas with a washrag. Do not rub or scrub the hat too aggressively, or you risk matting the wool fibers.
Rinse the hat in cold water and allow it to air dry.
Tips & Warnings
- If your MLB cap doesn't have a tag, then it may have been manufactured before 1983, in which case you should follow the instructions for washing an old MLB cap.
- Do not use bleach or hot water when laundering your MLB cap. Never put a hat in the dryer to dry.
