How to Make a Shark & Other Symbols on FB Chat

Chatting online can be an easy exchange, made even easier when using emoticons. Although most people are familiar with the smiley and sad faces, there are a few more creative ones that you can use on Facebook chat to enliven the conversation.

  • Select the friend you wish to chat with. You can do so by either clicking the thumbnail pictures of your friends on the left side of the screen (the green dots mean they are online, the gray mean they are inactive) or by clicking the chat button on the bottom right hand corner, then selecting the friend you wish to chat with.

  • In the chat box, type the following to create a shark: (^^^) The "(" is found by pressing shift 9, the last ")" is done by pressing shift 0, and the "^" is created with shift 6.

  • Press enter. Your shark emoticon should appear in your Facebook chat window.

  • Use a combination of symbols to create other emotions. For example, to make a robot appear, type : | ]. To make the ":" press shift ; for the "|", press shift \, which is usually found above the enter key, and for the "]", simply press the ] without the shift key. When you are done, hit enter.

  • To create a heart, press < 3. For the "<" press shift , and then 3. Type in another 3, then hit enter to see your heart.

  • To make a penguin, press <("). First press shift , for the "<" followed by shift 9 for the "(" and shift 10 for the ")". To make the eyes, press shift ' which will give you the " symbol. Then hit enter to see your penguin.
