How to Crochet Berets

How to Crochet Berets thumbnail
Crochet a beret-style hat for every member of your family following one basic formula.

Crocheting is an art form that allows you to create a variety of shapes with the same tools: yarn and a crochet hook. Use your crocheting skills to make a beret; this simple hat shape just requires basic increasing and decreasing skills to complete the beret. Follow a formula to make a crocheted beret and then customize it with your own choice of stitch patterns and combinations. Make your beret light and lacy or warm and wooly, based solely on the yarn you choose.

Instructions

    • 1

Start at the center top of the beret with a crochet magic circle. To do this, take the tail end of your yarn and wrap it counter-clockwise around your first two fingers twice. Pull your fingers out and preserve the loop of yarn; you will crochet your first round of stitches into the circle you have made.

    • 2

Make one chain stitch and then make five single crochet stitches into the center of the circle. Join with a slip stitch to close the round.

    • 3

Increase the size of your beret. For every round you need to add five more stitches than the previous round. So for round two, put two single crochets in every stitch around for a total of 10 stitches. For round three, make two single crochets in the first stitch followed by one in the next stitch; repeat this pattern around for 15 stitches. For round three, make two single crochets in one stitch and one in each of the next two; repeat this around for 20 stitches. Continue to increase by adding one more individual single crochet stitch into your repeated pattern of each subsequent round.

    • 4

Stop increasing the size of your beret when it is as wide as you want it to be. For a standard adult size, this should be approximately 10 to 12 inches in diameter.

    • 5

Decrease your beret's circumference. To do this, follow your increase pattern backwards; for the first decrease round, single crochet two together and then make the same number of individual single crochet stitches as you did in your last increase round. Continue to follow this decrease pattern, replacing your two single crochets from the increases with single crochet two together stitches. Stop decreasing when the circumference of the beret is slightly less than 1 inch smaller than the circumference of your head.

Crochet the brim of the beret. To do this, chain one and make one single crochet in every stitch around; repeat this for three more rounds. Make one final slip stitch, cut the working yarn and pull the tail all the way through that stitch. Weave in the ends of your yarn with an embroidery needle.

Tips & Warnings

  • To increase, follow this pattern: two single crochets in one stitch, one single crochet in each of the next "X" stitches. Add one more to "X" every time you start a new round.

  • To decrease, follow this pattern: single crochet two together followed by one single crochet in each of the next "X" stitches. Decrease "X" by one for every new round.

  • You can follow this pattern using half double crochet, double crochet or any other stitches you like.
