How to Design a Display Inside a Retail Store

In a retail store, the merchandise display plays a large role in getting customers to see the different products you have. No matter what size your store is, a display works to attract the attention of customers in the hopes they will make purchases and increase the sales for your business. There are a variety of ways to show off merchandise within the store to get customers to stop and look through your featured merchandise.

  • Analyze the traffic flow in the store to determine where the display would best attract attention. If you want to draw customers to the back of the store, set up the display there. Placing a display in the rear of the store causes the customer to walk past the rest of the store's merchandise, increasing the chance of a sale, according to the GLM Shows website.

  • Designate a theme for your display depending on the merchandise you want to showcase. For example, in an office supply store, an ideal display for back to school would feature backpacks, reams of paper, pencils and pens.

  • Select a display table or shelving system that reaches eye level to gain the most attention of the customer. Nesting tables that feature two or three levels allow you to create a visual pyramid of merchandise, which is easy for customers to scan.

  • Balance the look of the display by using darker merchandise on the lower level of shelving or nesting tables, and gradually place lighter-colored items toward the top of the shelving system. Balance the size of the merchandise by placing a large item on one side, followed by a cluster of products directly opposite.

  • Install lighting around your display to bring focus to the merchandise. Track lighting draws attention to a focal display in the store, while wall sconces highlight displays directly below. Additional lighting in the store can also draw attention to merchandise and can highlight a variety of display areas.

  • Create signage to attract attention and promote your display. Use large images or graphics to add impact to the display. For example, if your display features camping gear on sale, an ideal image to use behind the merchandise would be a family at a campsite using the type of items you are featuring.
