How to Decorate a Girly Bedroom for a 13-Year-Old Girl Without Buying Anything

Young teenagers tend to change their minds as often as they change their clothing so spending a lot of money on decorating makes little sense. If you have a 13-year-old who wants a girly bedroom, you can create it without spending any money. Most free options for decorating are not permanent, which makes redecorating easy when your adolescent tires of the girly look. If your 13-year-old wants more permanent decorating changes, such as paint, the redecorating will require more persistence, as finding free paint in girly colors can take time.

  • Search your home for feminine accessories that your teenager can use in her room. A large mirror, a lamp with soft features and white lampshade, unused lace curtains -- or perhaps a lace tablecloth that you can turn into curtains -- and white furniture will all add to the girly factor in a room at no cost.

  • Speak with friends and family to see if they have any items they can contribute to the new girly bedroom. Many people have unused decorations and furniture stored in their homes that they would be willing to lend or give to your 13-year-old.

  • Check free classified ads online for additional furniture and accessories you can pick up from people in your area. You may also find paint in girly colors. Paint is not an easy item to procure for free. Consistently check the classified sites you frequent to find paint that is usable in the room.

  • Remove dark furniture and any heavy or dark decorations from the room. If any of these items are necessities, though, make sure you have more feminine replacements.

  • Layer shades of pink linens around the room. Do not worry about every linen matching, as long as all of them are shades of pink or possibly purple. This means you may hang a pair of pale pink curtains acquired from a friend and still use the hot pink pillows your teenager has had on her bed.

  • Allow your 13-year-old to dictate the layout of the bedroom and make the call on when it is girly enough. This is important, because each girl's definition of girly is different. A parent can easily overdo or not do enough.
