How to Tie off for Crocheting
Crocheting opens up a world of projects that can be made from simple yarn. Even a novice can learn to make afghans, shawls, scarves, sweaters and hats. More advanced patterns call for multiple yarn colors to be used in one project. In order to switch colors, or finish a project, one must know how to tie off their work. It is a simple, yet important step, and when done right will prevent your work from unraveling.

1
Cut the loose yarn to a length of 4 to 6 inches with sharp scissors to create a tail. Check your pattern first to determine if a differing length is specified.
-
2
Bring the loose tail over the crochet hook. Wrap the tail from the back of the hook over the top towards the front. Bend the tail so it slides into the hooked portion.
-
-
3
Keep a firm grasp on the tail's end while pulling the hooked portion through the loop of yarn currently on the crochet hook. Once the hook clears the loop, release the tail's end and pull the entire length of yarn through the loop.

4
Tug gently on the tail to tighten the loop around it to lock it in place. Use your crochet hook to weave in the length of the tail through previous stitches. Insert your crochet hook through a stitch, hook the tail and pull it completely through the stitch. Move to the previous stitch, insert the hook, hook the tail and pull it completely through. Continue this process until the entire end is woven into your work.
