If you have somewhere fun to go, but nothing to wear, with some basic sewing supplies and a knit fabric, you can make a new halter dress in less than two hours. You don't need a lot of expertise and will not do a lot of cutting, so even a beginning sewer can make a halter dress without a pattern.
Things You'll Need
- 1-1/2 yards knit fabric
- Sewing machine
- Hook and eye closure
Cut a 9-inch slit diagonally in a corner of the fabric. Pin the two corners you just cut behind your neck wrong side facing out. Make sure the fabric overlaps 1 inch.
Looking in a mirror, pull the two edges of fabric around you. Pin where the edges meet behind your back. Mark how low you want the neckline and how long you want the dress. Remove the dress.
Lay the fabric flat in front of you. Cut the fabric off 1/2 inch below where you marked it for length. Cut the neckline as deep as you marked.
Match the edges of the fabric from the pin to the hem, right sides together. Sew the back seam together on the sewing machine at the 1/4-inch seam allowance, starting at the pin and ending at the hem, using a stretch stitch.
Fold the points of the neck straps down 1 inch with the wrong sides together. Sew down with a sewing machine.
Fold the edges of the neckline down 1/4 inch with the wrong sides together. Sew the edge down on the right side of the fabric using a stretch stitch. Fold the edges from the neck to the back down 1/4-inch with the wrong sides together. Sew the edge down on the right side of the fabric using a stretch stitch.
Fold the hem up 1/2 inch around with the wrong sides together. Sew the hem in place with a stretch stitch on the right side of the fabric.
Sew a hook and eye closure to the ends of the neck straps by hand.
Tips & Warnings
- You can use a stretch overcast stitch or a zigzag stitch instead of a stretch stitch.
- You can sew ribbon on the ends of the neck straps and tie instead of the hook and eye closure.
- Be careful taking off the dress when it is pinned.
