How to Decorate a Long & Skinny Porch

A porch is a place to relax as well as entertain and should be viewed as an extension of your home. Decorate the porch as an outdoor room and choose décor that reflects your style yet embraces the beauty of the outdoors. Decorating a long, thin porch may seem difficult, but it is simply a matter of finding furniture and accessories that match in scale to the size of the space. Even if the space is limited, decorate in a manner that allows for enough room to easily move around.

Things You'll Need

  • Deck paint or stain
  • Concrete stain
  • Wood paint
  • Door mat
  • Outdoor furniture
  • Small side tables or stools
  • Lantern candles
  • Weatherproof cushions and throw pillows
  • Outdoor area rug
  • Weatherproof drapes
  • Weatherproof art
  • Wreath
  • Hanging plant baskets
  • Silk flowers
  • Rail planters
  • Outdoor flag
  • Decide what kind of outdoor space you want to create, whether it is for entertaining or relaxing. Choose a color scheme/

  • Paint or stain the floors. If desired, stencil a design on the floors as you paint. Paint the walls in either the same color or a color that complements the flooring. Paint the door if it just blends into the walls. If the door is recessed, paint it a red shade or another color that brings attention to it, brightening up the entrance to your house. Make sure the color does not clash with the rest of your house.

  • Place a vibrant, outdoor floor mat in front of the door.

  • Purchase and arrange outdoor furniture. Choose smaller pieces that will not block the narrow walkway, such as a narrow bench, swing or small patio furniture. Use woven polyurethane or wicker to keep the atmosphere light or use iron seating for a bolder look.

  • Place small, thin side tables or short stools next to the seating to place a book or drink.

  • Set small lantern candles on the tables. Use candles that stave off insects.

  • Place weatherproof cushions on all chairs, benches and swings. Use coordinating, bold throw pillows to give the sitting area a splash of color.

  • Lay an outdoor area rug on the floor to define the sitting area. Place a large, comfortable floor cushion on the rug for a comfortable spot to lounge.

  • Hang waterproof, outdoor drapes in a doorway or opening to help block the wind or divide the space. Choose sheer, light drapes for a breezy look or heavier, colored drapes to give the space an indoor feel, creating a feeling of enclosure.

  • Decorate the walls with weatherproof art pieces that match the theme of the space.

  • Hang a decorative wreath on the front door.

  • Hang planting baskets to bring the colors higher on the porch. Use silk flowers for year-round color. Wire the flowers into the baskets.

  • Set rail planters evenly across the porch rail, placing one between each set of posts. Put silk flowers or vines in them for immediate color and no maintenance, wiring them into the planters.

  • Hang a flag on a post near the entry to create movement. Choose a flag with a theme that matches the season.
