Caramel sauce is a rich confection you can drizzle over a variety of desserts, such as ice cream, brownies, cookies and cakes. You can also use caramel sauce for dipping fruit slices, to coat popcorn or nuts and to sweeten other desserts. However, purchasing caramel sauce commercially is expensive and often does not have the smoothness of homemade varieties. To melt caramels for sauces, you will need approximately 15 minutes and some common kitchen tools.
Things You'll Need
- 1 cup soft caramel candies
- 2 tbsp. heavy whipping cream
- Wooden spoon
Preheat a saucepan over low heat for 3 minutes.
Combine the caramel candies and heavy whipping cream in the saucepan. Begin stirring the caramels and whipping cream with a wooden spoon as soon as they begin to melt.
Stir the caramels and cream continuously until they form a smooth, even consistency. As the sauce begins to simmer, remove it from the heat.
Continue stirring the caramel sauce for 30 seconds after removing the pan from the heat. Use the melted caramels immediately, or refrigerate it in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

- If you do not have heavy whipping cream on hand, substitute 1 tbsp. whole milk.
