How to Dry Onions in a Dehydrator

Drying vegetables is an easy and effective way to preserve them. By removing the moisture, vegetables last longer and have a longer shelf life. A wide range of vegetables are suitable for dehydration, including onions. Onions play an important role in many recipes. Although dry onions don't have as pungent a taste or aroma as fresh onions, they still provide flavor for dishes. Dehydrators are effective for drying and preserving.

Things You'll Need

  • Dehydrator
  • Knife
  • Containers
  • Drying trays
  • Choose young immature onions with good color.

  • Slice the onions into rings about 1/8 inch thick with a knife.

  • Place the onions on drying trays on one layer. Leave a little space between the pieces.

  • Place the trays in the dehydrator. Turn the dehydrator to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Leave the onions in for 3 to 6 hours. Turn the onions over at the halfway mark.

  • Turn down heat to 130 degrees Fahrenheit for the last hour of dehydration.

  • Remove onion slices from dehydrator and let them cool.

  • Store the onions in containers and keep in a cool and dry place. Another option is to put the containers in the freezer.
