Candida is a type of fungal skin infection that occurs in skin folds and wet spaces on the body, according to Merck Manuals Online Medical Library. It usually occurs around the genitals, cuticles and in the mouth. Vaginal yeast infections and mouth thrush are two painful conditions that result from candida overgrowth in the body, though candida is always present in the system. It is only when overgrowth occurs -- often due to poor health and hygiene habits -- that candida becomes itchy and painful. Use internal and external methods to kill candida overgrowth as well as flushing the system with plenty of water.
Things You'll Need
- Selected herbal supplement
- Raw apple cider vinegar
- Tee tree oil
Take herbal supplements such as oil of oregano, garlic capsules or olive leaf. Choose an oregano oil with a high carvacrol content, an active ingredient for killing candida, according to Disabled World. Garlic is a big fighter of candida and can be taken orally as well as applied topically for near-instant relief. Olive leaf is a powerful herb with many health benefits including reducing candida in the body.
Apply diluted raw, unprocessed apple cider vinegar to affected areas as it kills candida. Look for apple cider vinegar that reads "with the mother." This substance is full of the enzymes necessary for keeping apple cider vinegar potent and effective. Try adding a few teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to your water as it can be taken internally. Also, try adding one cup of apple cider vinegar to your bathwater for soothing relief.
Add natural treatments to tampons. Options include adding three or four drops of tea tree oil to a tampon and leaving it in for about an hour. Tea tree essential oil is antifungal and is used in many antifungal treatments. Garlic cloves also work as an effective vaginal treatment, or try a tampon soaked in plain yogurt for relief.
Drink plenty of water. As with any illness or condition, flushing the system with water is one of the best ways to rid the body of fungal, bacterial and viral infections. Drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses of water daily to flush sugars from the body, which cause candida buildup. Drink more if possible.
Maintain proper hygiene and wear loose-fitting, cotton clothing. Tight, restrictive non-cotton clothing, especially combined with poor hygiene, provides a breeding ground for candida.
Reduce, if not eliminate sugar, alcohol and carbohydrate foods from your diet until you are free of the overgrowth. Sugars from these foods feed candida and will prolong your infection.
