Sterling silver can be used to make things like silverware, jewelry or even small decorative boxes. If you have items in your home that are made of sterling silver, then you know that these items can become worn out looking and tarnished over time. The less often you use the sterling items, the more tarnished and dull the surface can become. To clean your sterling silver and give the surface a brighter appearance, you can use everyday home products.
Things You'll Need
- Baking pan
- Aluminum foil
- Hot water
- Baking soda
- Measuring cups
- Dish towel
- Soft toothbrush
- Soft cloth
Cover a baking pan with aluminum foil. Make sure the bottom and all the edges are completely covered with the foil.
Run hot water in your faucet and wait for it to heat up. Then, fill the baking pan with the hot water.
Place the sterling silver pieces you want to clean inside the pan.
Pour in about two cups of baking soda and about 1/4 cup salt. Spread these substances over all the silver inside the pan.
Wait about 10 minutes. During this time, a chemical reaction will take place between the substances you added and the sterling silver that helps clean the silver.
Move the silver around in the pan. Flip over the pieces if you can. Wait another 10 minutes.
Take out the sterling silver pieces and lay the items on a clean dish towel. Brush off each one with a soft toothbrush. Dry with a soft cloth.
