You can make a smooth and rich basic white, or béchamel, sauce using milk and butter, along with a few other basic ingredients. The creamy white sauce is versatile enough to pour over a wide range of dishes, such as casseroles, scalloped potatoes, enchiladas and pasta. You can melt cheese into the white sauce to enhance the flavor further. Making the perfect white sauce takes a little patience, but the effort will be worth it.
Things You'll Need
- Medium saucepan
- 2 tbsp. butter
- 2 sliced green onions (optional)
- 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- Salt and ground black pepper, to taste
Melt 2 tbsp. of butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Add green onions to the pan if desired. Saute the onions in the butter for 5 minutes, or until they are soft.
Add 2 tbsp. of all-purpose flour and blend it into the melted butter until it is smooth.
Slowly pour 1 cup of cold milk into the flour and butter mixture. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, whisking constantly to create a smooth and creamy sauce.
Continue whisking the sauce for 5 minutes, or until it is thickened. Add salt and ground black pepper to taste. Use the sauce immediately for best results.
