Vans are a particular brand of canvas trainers. Once you have gotten dirt or stains on your beloved all-white Vans, then you may have to spend some time trying to restore them to their former glory. You may need to attempt the method a couple of times to get the shoes as white as possible.
Things You'll Need
- Wire brush
- Old toothbrush
- Murphy's oil soap
- Liquid laundry detergent
- Hot water
- White shoe polish
Remove the laces from your Vans and scrub off excess debris such as caked-on mud with a wire brush.
Put the Vans in your washing machine on a cool wash cycle with liquid laundry detergent to bring out as much as the whiteness as possible. Do not put them on a fast spin as this may damage the shoes.
Tip a few drops of Murphy's oil onto the head of the old toothbrush and begin scrubbing the Vans. Bring out the all-white color by targeting stains directly. Use firm, circular movements to lift up the stained patches.
Soak the trainers in hot water and more liquid laundry detergent to get rid of the stains. Leave the shoes in the mixture overnight if you can, then rinse them using clean water.
Dry out the Vans for at least 24 hours. Then assess how much of the white color is restored on the Vans. Use the white shoe polish to cover particular areas where stains are visible.
Tips & Warnings
- Prevent the all-white Vans from staining by looking after them from the outset. Keep them in your closet when not in use and do not wear them during wet weather.
- Putting your Vans in the washing machine on a regular basis may shorten their life span by weakening the glue and stitching. However, if used sparingly, it is the best method to clean them up.
