How to Hand Sew a Satin Stitch
A satin stitch is a stitch in embroidery that is used to fill in small shapes. It creates a solid block of colored embroidery, and it is one of the basic steps to use when filling in a design. Use the satin stitch for a small simple design like a leaf or a flower petal. Use several rows of a satin stitch to cover a larger figure. The satin stitch is a straightforward stitch to learn and it is the foundation of many embroidery designs.
Instructions
-
-
1
Draw a simple design on the fabric with pencil, like a leaf or a circle.
-
2
Place the fabric in the embroidery hoop, stretching it taut. The design you drew should be centered.
-
-
3
Locate the widest point of the design. This is the most convenient place to start the satin stitch.
-
4
Thread the embroidery needle with embroidery floss and knot the two loose ends together.
-
5
Push the needle through the fabric from the back of the design. The needle should come out on the edge of the design at the widest spot.
-
6
Make a single stitch across the design. This creates a single stripe of color across the design.
-
7
Push the needle back through the fabric, very close to the spot where you initially pushed the needle through from the back. Ideally, you are leaving no visible space at all between the two stitches.
-
8
Continue stitching across the the design until you have half the design covered.
-
9
Repeat steps 5 through 8 for the other half of the design.
