Unwanted food and drink rinsed off dishes, cups and silverware enter the drain of the sink. Such items may cause foul odors to come from the sink's drain, even if no significant clog or blockage exists. Cleaning the inside area of the sink with a household cleaner or dish soap does not eliminate such smells. A homemade drain cleaner breaks up the gunk that creates the bad smells and prevents serious drain clogs.
Things You'll Need
- White vinegar
- Baking soda
Remove all items, such as dishes, soaps and sponges, from the sink.
Rinse the inside of the sink with hot tap water for 30 to 60 seconds. This sends liquids and debris that cause foul odors down the drain.
Saturate a sponge or cloth with undiluted white vinegar. Wipe the inside of the sink with the sponge/cloth. Don't worry about rinsing the sink yet as you'll do so later.
Pour baking soda and then white vinegar into the drain. The two items break up debris that cause foul odors inside drains. The Reader's Digest website suggests using ½ cup baking soda and 1 cup white vinegar, but a "more is better" method for both ingredients is fine. Wait 15 minutes.
Rinse the entire inside of the sink with tap water. Leave the water running for a few minutes to thoroughly rinse out the drain.
