How to Check for Pending Patents

Save

When an application for a patent is filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, its status is listed as "pending." This means that while the patent application has been filed, it has not yet been officially approved. To check up on and research patent applications that are in "Pending" status, use the USPTO website.

  • Open your web browser and visit the USPTO website for "Patent Application Information Retrieval." This site allows you to search through all patent applications that are in pending status.

  • Type the letters and numbers in the Captcha box on the screen. Click "Continue."

  • Select the field by which you would like to search for a pending patent application. You can search by application number, control number, patent number, PCT number or publication number. Click the small circle next to the type of search you would like to perform.

  • Type the information you know about your pending patent into the "Search" box. Click the "Search" button. The page that returns will display information about patents that match the information you searched for.
