Eyelash mites are tiny parasites that live in the hair follicles of the eyelash roots. While according to Webster's Dictionary most people have mites naturally, some individuals have an allergy to them. Red eyes, swelling of the eyelid and flaky skin or rashes are common allergic reactions. The infection that eyelash mites can cause is known as demodicosis. Treating the infection quickly and completely will help prevent future episodes.
Things You'll Need
- No-tear baby soap
- Tea tree oil
- New make-up
- Clean sheets and pillow cases
Wash your face and eye area with a gentle no-tear baby soap. Dilute the baby soap with water to create a 50/50 solution. Gently scrub with a washcloth twice a day.
Apply a drop of tea tree oil diluted with water to each eyebrow, as well as a drop to each eyelash, because mites living in the brows can easily drop down into the eyelashes.
Throw away all your eye make-up and buy new items. Avoid wearing any make-up for at least one week, to keep the area clean.
Wash sheets and pillowcases on a regular weekly basis.
Schedule an appointment with your doctor if the problem persists. Your doctor can prescribe a topical antibiotic ointment to help kill the mites and clear up the problem.
Tips & Warnings
- Maintain a healthy schedule of cleansing to prevent further eyelash mite problems.
- Be careful not to overcleanse the area, as this can cause dryness and further irritation.
