Instructions to Crochet a Book Cover

Create a simple crochet book cover to protect your current read. By using single crochet, you can create a tightly woven cover to completely encase the book's cover with no holes or gaps. Use solid or multi-color yarn to give it a more decorative look. Crocheted book covers can be removed and washed if they become soiled. This simple pattern can be easily adjusted for any size book and can be created in one sitting.

Things You'll Need

  • Yarn
  • Crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Lay the book open on a flat surface. Tie a slipknot in the end of your yarn and make a chain with a crochet hook. The chain should be equal to the length of the open book, from left to right. Chain an additional 6 to 8 inches for the flaps.

  • Turn the chain and start in the second chain from the hook. Single crochet in each chain stitch across the length of the chain. Try to make tight, even stitches.

  • Turn your work and make one chain stitch. Single crochet in each stitch until you reach the end of the row. Repeat this process until your work is 1/4 inch longer than the cover of the book, from top to bottom. Tie off, clip the yarn, and weave in the ends.

  • Fold each vertical edge inward 3 to 4 inches. Stitch along the top and bottom edges of each flap using a tapestry needle and yarn. Tie the ends off and weave in the excess lengths. Slip the front and back book covers into the flaps and close.

Tips & Warnings

  • Any size crochet hook will work with this pattern.
  • To create a pouch, shorten the initial chain, fold in half, and stitch along the bottom and side.
