How to Make Dishwasher Gel Soap

Instead of purchasing overpriced dishwasher gels that contain mysterious and unpronounceable ingredients, make your own version using completely natural ingredients. Liquid castile soap and water make a simple dishwasher gel that works.

Simple Castile-Soap Gel

Liquid Castile soap and water team up to create a simple dishwasher gel that you can whip up in a minute.

  1. Mix 8 ounces of Castile soap and a cup of water in a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid, such as a mason jar.
  2. Place the lid on the jar; then shake the ingredients gently.

  • Use a citrus-scented Castile soap if you enjoy a citrusy fragrance as you wash dishes; otherwise, stick with an unscented version.

Using the Gel With Vinegar

Why Vinegar?

Vinegar helps remove greasy residues that may cling to your dishes. It's important to add the vinegar separately because it ensures your soap gel actually cleans the dishes; otherwise, the two may cancel out each other's beneficial properties.

  • Add more vinegar to the rinse compartment of your dishwasher if your home has hard water or if the glassware often has spots after washing completes.

Directions for Use:

  1. Add 1 tablespoon of your homemade dishwasher gel to the open soap compartment in the dishwasher.
  2. Place a cup of white vinegar in the compartment that closes; then close the compartment.
