Carpets receive a full assault of dirt and grime, especially with children and pets living in the home. Over time, dirty shoes and paws leave your carpet smelly and infected with allergens. Deodorizing the carpet provides a clean-smelling home and disinfecting helps prevent or reduce viral or allergic outbreaks. With the right products and procedures, you can thoroughly deodorize and disinfect your carpets, leaving your home smelling and feeling clean.
Things You'll Need
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 1 cup borax
- 1 cup cornmeal
- Straw broom
Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into a bowl. Add 1 cup each of borax and cornmeal to the baking soda. Stir the mixture.
Sprinkle the mixture using your hand over the entire carpet. Cover the carpet generously with the disinfecting and deodorizing mixture. Make additional mixture for large carpet areas or when treating several rooms.
Sweep and push the mixture into the carpet with a straw broom. The deeper the mixture can reach into the carpet, the better the carpet will be disinfected and deodorized. Allow the mixture to remain on the carpet overnight.
Vacuum the mixture from the carpet the next day. Slowly run the vacuum over the carpet so it removes all of the mixture. Empty the canister or replace the bag as it fills with the mixture. An empty canister or bag will provide the vacuum with better suction power.
