A kilim rug or carpet is a Turkish, pile-free floor covering. Usually made from wool fibers, some homeowners also use kilim carpets as decorative wall hangings. Regular vacuuming of a kilim carpet will maintain the carpet's cleanliness, but the carpet will require washing once every three to five years, depending on the traffic. The gentlest method of cleaning a kilim carpet is by hand-washing it with olive oil soap.
Things You'll Need
- 1 gallon cold water
- 2 cups grated olive oil soap
- Soft-bristled scrub brush
Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of cold water. Add 2 cups of grated olive oil bar soap. Stir the mixture with a spoon to dissolve the soap.
Lay the kilim carpet on a flat surface. Dip the scrub brush into the olive oil solution. Starting at one end of the carpet, begin working the soapy water into the carpet with short, even, overlapping strokes of the brush. Re-wet the brush whenever it begins to dry.
Continue brushing the soapy water into the carpet as you move toward the other end of the carpet. This loosens dirt as you go and moves it all to one end of the carpet. Start over at the top of the rug, brushing it out three times.
Flip the rug or carpet over and repeat the washing process three times on that side.
Empty the bucket and fill it with clean, cold water. Rinse the scrub brush. Repeat the brushing of the carpet with the clean water to rinse the wool. Brush each side of the carpet with the clean water three times.
Lay the carpet on a flat surface to air dry. When the top feels dry, flip it over and let the back dry.
