Homemade Remedy to Eliminate a Smoke Odor

Smoke leaves an offensive odor on everything it touches. Fabric, carpet fibers and even hard surfaces such as walls can trap smoke odor. Trying to rid your home of this odor can be frustrating, but, fortunately, you can use a few common and inexpensive household items to make things smell clean and fresh again.

Things You'll Need

  • Laundry detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Bucket
  • Sponge
  • Spray bottle
  • Baking soda
  • Vacuum
  • Bowls
  • Pot
  • Cloves, cinnamon sticks or lemon slices
  • Launder draperies and curtains in cool water, 1/4 cup laundry detergent and 2 cups white vinegar. Vinegar is an all-natural cleaner and deodorizer that removes tough odors from a variety of surfaces.

  • Fill a bucket with equal parts water and white vinegar. Saturate a sponge in the mixture and wring out the excess liquid. Wipe the walls with the dampened sponge. Let the vinegar air-dry on the walls.

  • Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar. Mist upholstery with the vinegar and let air-dry. As the vinegar dissipates, it will remove the smoke odor. Repeat this step as often as needed.

  • Sprinkle baking soda onto carpets and rugs. Baking soda -- like vinegar -- is an all-natural cleaner and deodorizer that removes unpleasant odors. Let the baking soda sit on the carpet for several hours. After the allotted time has passed, remove the baking soda from the carpet with a vacuum. Repeat the process as needed.

  • Remove smoke odor from the air by placing several vinegar-filled bowls around your home. Furthermore, simmer a pot of water on your stove with cloves, cinnamon sticks or lemon slices. The cloves, cinnamon and lemon will remove odors while filling your home with a pleasant aroma.
