How to Wallpaper a Kitchen Cabinet

Update your kitchen by giving your cabinets a new look. Professional cabinet refinishing can be a costly endeavor; for a less expensive alternative, consider covering your existing cabinets with wallpaper. Choose a wallpaper that complements the look you are trying to achieve--anything from solid colors, mild patterns or bold designs will work. When selecting a wallpaper for your cabinets, it's important to choose one that is waterproof and easy to clean, as it will be exposed to water and likely become dirty.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Measuring tape
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Wallpaper
  • Utility knife
  • Premixed wallpaper paste
  • Paint roller
  • Tray
  • Wallpaper smoother
  • Remove the cabinet doors and hardware with a screwdriver.

  • Lay the cabinet doors on a flat surface. Measure the length and width of the doors. Write down your measurements.

  • Transfer the door measurements onto the wallpaper. Lightly mark the door measurements on the back of the wallpaper with a pencil. Use a utility knife to cut pieces of wallpaper that will cover the length and width of each cabinet door. You may need to cut more than one piece of wallpaper to cover the width of the cabinet doors.

  • Turn the wallpaper face down. Pour some premixed wallpaper paste in a tray. Use a paint roller to roll wallpaper paste on the back of each piece of paper. Fold the pasted side over onto itself. Fold the top half down toward the middle and the bottom half up to meet the top half in the middle of the piece of paper. Smooth the paper without making an actual crease. Set the paper aside to allow the paste to absorb into the paper. Follow the "booking" time recommended on the wallpaper's label.

  • Unfold the top portion of the wallpaper onto the cabinet door, aligning it at the corners, and press it down on the cabinet with the wallpaper smoother. Once the top portion of the cabinet is covered, unfold the bottom half of the wallpaper and smooth it down on the cabinet. If using more than one piece of patterned wallpaper, make sure the patterns on each piece of paper match up.
